Abstract

The perovskites, particularly the lanthanide perovskites, are compounds active as catalysts in oxidation processes for water purification from organic pollutants. In this work, the activation of the oxidant peroxymonosulfate over composites based on SmFeO3 and CuO (ratio 1:1, 1:2, 2:1), prepared by a simple two-step chemical route, is presented. Structural, morphological, textural and optical properties of the obtained SmFeO3/CuO composites were evaluated by XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, XPS and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The excellent catalytic activity in photo-Fenton-like reaction for the antibiotic sulfathiazole degradation was achieved, surpassing that of the individual components proving a synergistic effect. The role of various parameters such as SmFeO3 to CuO ratio, temperature, light irradiation, water matrix, was estimated. By a series of radical scavenging experiments the reaction mechanism was proposed, justified by the investigated surface atomic composition and the oxidation state of the elements in the semiconductors, especially the oxidation state of Fe and Cu. The stability and recyclability of the best composite SmFeO3/CuO-2:1 was evaluated as well as the metal content in the filtrates after catalytic experiments.
